Depending on the scholar, the debate is either with the Castilians or with the French, and often enlisting one against the other. It is admittedly a rare rare scholar who goes further afield, and one who cites actually English work, rather than US work on Catalonia, is a great rarity indeed. All the same, the island within which they're insular is a bit bigger than just Catalonia.

And actually, the ones with the scariest outputs in my field also seem to be the ones who read furthest afield. When do they get the time? Can Jordi Bolòs ever sleep? etc.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6250713400045458826.post-38153105341102400232008-09-25T17:21:00.000-04:002008-09-25T17:21:00.000-04:00"Catalan historians often seem to blithely ignore ..."Catalan historians often seem to blithely ignore historiographical debates focused on other regions."

See, I find this intriguing, not just for nuns, but in the context of Catalan historiography in general. I've always wondered why Catalan scholars can crank out so many books. I knew that they saved time by leaving aside pesky things like theoretical frameworks and arguments in favor of exposition, and they do the latter very well. But now that you mention it, much of the scholarship on lots of topics seems rather insular. You're right: they know their local sources inside and out, and tracking down their footnotes is almost always rewarding.Notorious Ph.D.https://www.blogger.com/profile/08700875559325201086noreply@blogger.com
